Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - The vast majority of German candidates for the Olympic Games in Tokyo advocate not giving preference to athletes and adhering to the nationwide sequence of corona vaccinations.

This was the result of a survey carried out by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) among around 1700 potential Olympic participants over the past two weeks, the DOSB announced.

Of the 676 athletes who submitted fully completed responses, 73 percent are in favor of the previously established vaccination sequence.

Only 18 percent would like a different prioritization.

Almost three quarters of Germans also reject the preference of top athletes for corona vaccinations, as shown in a representative survey by infratest dimap on behalf of the WDR magazine “Sport inside”.

73 percent are of the opinion that the suggestion to give preference to vaccinating athletes participating in national and international competitions is going in the wrong direction.

This rejection is higher among women (78 percent) than among men (67 percent).

About a quarter (24 percent) of those surveyed spoke out in favor of it, as can be seen from the figures published by the ARD “Sportschau” on Friday.

"With this, Team D once again demonstrates an exemplary sense of responsibility in the interests of society as a whole," said DOSB President Alfons Hörmann.

"The overall result now available confirms the position we have communicated for weeks."

The DOSB does not expect any preferential treatment for top-class sport, but it is hoping that sufficient vaccine will be available in the second quarter to safely send the athletes to major world sport events.

The discussion was triggered at the beginning of January by the longest-serving IOC member, the Canadian Richard Pound.

In his opinion, athletes should be given priority in vaccination.

He does not believe that the relatively very few vaccine doses required for the athletes would cause a public outcry, said the 78-year-old, who has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1978, the news channel Sky News.
