Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin is providing additional warm places for the homeless on the upcoming icy weekend.

In a hostel on Boxhagener Strasse in Friedrichshain, 100 beds will be available day and night from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, as the Senate Department for Health announced on Friday evening.

In addition, a facility with 100 places will open on Sunday on the site of the former Karl Bonhoeffer Nervenklinik in Reinickendorf.

The number is to be increased to 200 from Tuesday.

A hostel on Köpenicker Straße in Kreuzberg increases its capacity from 100 places by a further 20, including for homeless wheelchair users.

According to the German Meteorological Service, the temperatures should drop to minus eight degrees during the day at the weekend, and the nights should be even colder.

According to the announcement, there are currently 1,090 emergency overnight places in the facilities of the cold aid.

In the past week, 121 remained free.

In the city there are also five buses with social workers to support homeless people and to take them to institutions.

Anyone who suspects that a person is suffering from the cold should speak to them politely and ask if they would like to receive help, it said.

Especially in winter it could be life-threatening to sleep on the street.

"Please don't look the other way if you suspect there is a risk of frostbite," the Senate Administration asked the residents.

In such cases, the emergency numbers 110 (police) or 112 (fire brigade / rescue service) should be dialed.
