Schwerin (dpa / mv) - According to an evaluation by the Barmer health insurance company, sick leave due to flu has more than halved during the corona pandemic in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The number of cases fell by an average of 54 percent between November and Christmas 2020 compared to the same period in 2018 and 2019, the health insurance company announced on Friday.

At the beginning of this year, the flu had played a very minor role so far.

Distance and hygiene rules as part of the fight against pandemics obviously also reduced the risk of influenza, it said.

The fewer severe flu cases there are, the more capacity the hospitals have to treat corona patients.

A vaccination against the flu makes sense now, since the influenza season could drag on until April or May.
