In Algeria, parliamentarians are calling on the new American president.

Two weeks after Joe Biden's inauguration, the two chambers of the Algerian Parliament wrote a letter asking him to reconsider his predecessor's decision concerning Western Sahara.

In December 2020, Donald Trump recognized Moroccan sovereignty over this territory, while Morocco formalized the normalization of its relations with Israel.

The groups of the two chambers of the Algerian Parliament, the National People's Assembly and the Council of the Nation, address their letter to the new American president, to "

boost the process of settlement in Western Sahara, in accordance with the rules, principles and resolutions of the United Nations

 ".

The text is relayed by the Algerian press agency APS and the message is also highlighted on the AFN Facebook page.

Contradiction

In their letter, the parliamentarians believe that the position of Donald Trump, who recognized

the sovereignty of Morocco

over this territory of Western Sahara, while the UN considers it non-autonomous.

is at odds with American positions on this issue, and with international legality.

Algeria, traditional support for the separatists of the Polisario Front, for its part pleads in favor of a self-determination referendum.

While congratulating Joe Biden on his election, about two weeks after taking office, Algerian parliamentarians therefore ask him to review the decree signed by his predecessor.

Last week, when asked about the US position on this issue, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken seemed to indicate that no decision had been taken yet.
