Kiel (dpa) - The German handball master THW Kiel has come out of the world championship break well.

In the Champions League home game against HC Motor Zaporozhye from Ukraine, the Kiel celebrated an undisputed 34:23 (16:12) victory on Thursday.

With 9: 9 points, the North Germans, for whom Domagoj Duvnjak was the most successful thrower with eight goals, remain fifth in Group B. Artem Kosakewitsch scored five goals for the guests.

THW coach Filip Jicha did without his two Danish world champions during the entire game.

For the brothers Niklas and Magnus Landin Dario Quenstedt came in goal and Malte Voigt on the left wing.

The defending champion got off to a good start in the game on the club's 117th birthday.

The Croatian playmaker Duvnjak marked the first three goals for THW, who were in the lead 7-3 after ten minutes.

The early lead was the foundation for a safe victory for Kiel, which Quenstedt secured with numerous parades.

For the THW it was the first of a total of nine games in just 25 days.

The Bundesliga home game against SC DHfK Leipzig follows on Sunday.

Three days later the second leg against Motor Zaporozhye will be in the Ukraine.
