Leipzig (dpa) - A majority of the people in the Central German district are in favor of the coal phase-out and the associated structural change.

In a survey published on Thursday on behalf of the European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany, 61 percent of those affected spoke out in favor of the energy transition.

Almost as high is the proportion of those who voted for the coal phase-out (56 percent).

Slightly more than half of the residents (51 percent) are open to structural change.

This means that there are significantly more supporters of the coal phase-out in the Central German district than in the Lusatian district, where only a little more than a third of the residents are in favor of the coal phase-out (36 percent).

The people in the region see the creation of attractive, well-paid jobs and the expansion of the digital infrastructure as central tasks.

That is a second statement from the “Central Germany Monitor” surveyed for the first time.

The online survey is intended to examine opinions in Leipzig, Halle and the districts of Altenburger Land, Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Burgenlandkreis, Leipzig, Mansfeld-Südharz, northern Saxony and Saalekreis on the subject of structural change.

“The results show people's fundamental willingness to change.

At the same time, many still lack a strong vision for new economic prospects after the coal phase-out, ”it said.

For the “Central Germany Monitor”, the Leipzig market research company MAS surveyed 1,038 people from the region in November last year.

The study is designed as a long-term observation and is to be repeated annually.
