Munich (dpa / lby) - "The hut is on fire" - under this often used motto, restaurateurs in Bavaria switched on the lights in their inns on Thursday evening.

They wanted to draw attention to their desperate situation in the Corona crisis.

The innkeepers followed a call from the Association for the Preservation of Bavarian Tavern Culture (VEBWK) to leave the lights on in their establishments on Friday night.

The association thus underlines the demand for an opening of the catering trade in compliance with the hygiene and distance rules from March 1st.

"The catering industry is at the end," said VEBWK managing director Ursula Zimmermann.

Many restaurateurs are already thinking of giving up.

However, this depended on the existence of employees, through suppliers and landlords, right through to cleaning services.

"Resignation, anger, hopelessness and enormous fear of the future have been determining the life of everyone who is directly or indirectly connected to the catering industry for almost a year," said Zimmermann.

"We now need an opening perspective."

According to Zimmermann, the VEBWK association has around 7,000 members.

How many restaurateurs took part in the campaign was open in the evening.

"We are assuming a high level of solidarity," said the vice-chairman of the association, Hans Koller.

The night is also long.
