Leipzig (dpa / sn) - The 24-year-old rhinoceros bull Ndugu from the Leipzig Zoo is dead. As the administration announced on Thursday, veterinarians and keepers fought for his life for more than three weeks.

"He had to struggle with anorexia, digestive problems and a steadily deteriorating general condition, so that he had to be released on Tuesday."

Ndugu suffered from severe constipation, which ultimately led to a restriction in airway functions.

“An operation on such a heavy pachyderm is not possible due to its mass and the nature of the skin.

We couldn't save him and had to spare him suffering, ”explained zoo veterinarian Andreas Bernhard.

Ndugu came to Leipzig from the Hanover Zoo in the summer of 2015.

According to the zoo, the loss of the bull weighs heavily on the critically endangered species.

Ndugu had successfully raised offspring.

It was said that his daughter Naima has given birth to two cubs herself.

Two rhinoceros now live in Leipzig Zoo with Sarafine and Saba.
