The National Police believe that the explosion of the archbishopric building on Toledo Street in Madrid, which occurred on January 20, had its origin in a gas leak outside the building due to

the rupture of a pipe

for reasons that have not yet have been determined.

The preliminary report of the Scientific Police has yet to be written and in the next few days it will be sent to the head of the Court of Instruction number 35 of Plaza de Castilla, which directs the investigation of the explosion that caused four deaths in Madrid.

However, the first conclusions of the investigation suggest that the gas leak occurred outside the building due to a broken pipe and the gas probably entered the building through a connection and reached the upper floors, according to El País advances and police sources have confirmed to Efe.

Investigators have also located a sinkhole or landslide caused, apparently, by the rupture of a water pipe, which in this case is the responsibility of Canal de Isabel II.

Regarding the explosion, sources from the Virgen de la Paloma Parish in Madrid assured Efe that on January 20 he

smelled gas in the street

and that the heating was not working well.

The explosion caused the death of four people: the priest Ramón Pérez Ayala, 36;

his friend David Santos, a parishioner who came to the building to try to help after the heater stopped working and he detected the smell of gas;

Javier, a 45-year-old bricklayer from La Puebla Amoradiel (Toledo) who worked in the building opposite, and Stefko Ivanov, a 46-year-old Bulgarian national who was on the street at the time.

The magistrate who is investigating the case has also requested reports from the Judicial Police of the Center Police Station and the Fire Department of the Madrid City Council to elucidate the causes of the explosion.
