According to Kyodo News, Japan’s Osaka University Donation Chair Professor Lin Yongping (Stem Cell Applied Medicine) and other people’s team recently published results in the online edition of the American scientific journal Cell Reports, saying that humans are used to induce pluripotency. Stem cells (iPS cells) produced conjunctival tissue that touched the whites of the eyes, and it was confirmed that they secrete "mucin", a tear component that protects the surface of the eyeball.

This is expected to help research on how to treat dry eye with decreased mucin production and dry eye surface.

  The team added the growth-promoting "epidermal cell growth factor (EGF)" substance to the basic cells of the eye made from iPS cells, and cultured them for 6 to 10 weeks to produce cells in the preconjunctival stage.

After that, "Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF)" was added and cultured for about 2 weeks to produce conjunctival epithelial cells and conjunctival goblet cells that produce mucin.

  According to reports, it is very difficult to make the conjunctiva manually because it is not very clear how the conjunctiva is formed.

Lin Longping said: "The conjunctiva can be made for experiments, which may be helpful for disease research."

  Regarding iPS cells, the cornea that covers the pupil and the retinal cells that lighten the inside of the eyeball have been produced, and clinical research on the treatment of related diseases is progressing.
