Halle (dpa) - The number of corporate insolvencies fell again after an increase in December at the beginning of 2021.

In January around 690 partnerships and corporations filed for bankruptcy in Germany, as the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research in Halle (IWH) announced on Thursday.

Thus, the number in January is 23 percent below the December value, but above the mean value for the preceding months between August and November.

Compared to January 2020, the number of reported bankruptcies has even decreased, according to the IWH.

The institute sees the reasons for the low insolvency figures in part in the state aid measures during the crisis, in the suspension of the obligation to file for insolvency and in the companies' wait-and-see attitude.

"Many companies have gone into the crisis healthy and with financial cushions and can hold out until the recovery after the crisis", said the head of the structural change and productivity department, Steffen Müller.

Müller is also optimistic about the coming months.

The obligation to file for insolvency, which is suspended until April, for companies that are entitled to apply for the so-called November and December aid is likely to dampen the bankruptcy trend.

"The analysis of our leading indicators shows that a wave of insolvencies is not to be expected in the coming months either," said Müller.
