04 February 2021 German police will not allow Liverpool to enter Germany to play the Champions League match against Leipzig on 16 February due to coronavirus restrictions.

This was stated by the German Interior Ministry.

The decision comes after Leipzig officially asked German authorities to grant the English side entry into the country earlier this week.

The German government, on Saturday, closed airports to flights for airline passengers arriving from regions where variants of the coronavirus are spreading, coming from the UK, Ireland, Brazil, Portugal and South Africa until 17 as a measure to counter the spread of the virus, unless they are German citizens or foreigners residing in Germany.

According to local media, citing sources from the Ministry of the Interior, Leipzig's request to grant an exemption to the Reds, so as to be able to play the game as scheduled, would have been rejected.

At this point, with Liverpool not authorized to land in Germany, it will be necessary to find an alternative.

A new venue will therefore be needed for the first leg of the eighth of the Champions League between Leipzig and Liverpool scheduled for next February 16th in Germany.
