Darmstadt (dpa / lhe) - In a rear-end collision on the A 5, part of a horse truck tipped over.

For an unexplained cause, a driver hit the van on Thursday near Heppenheim, the police said.

According to a police spokeswoman, the trailer rocked as a result of the impact and caused the towing vehicle, in which two of the three horses were located, to tip over.

The driver of the colliding vehicle was injured and driven to the nearest hospital.

The horses could be saved without any significant injuries, it was said - a veterinarian came to the scene of the accident to take care of the animals.

The driver and passenger of the horse transporter were uninjured.

The lane was completely closed to the south between the Heppenheim and Hemsbach junctions until noon.

According to the information, the traffic was jammed up to the Bensheim junction;

At times the opposite lane was also closed.

Both vehicles were no longer ready to drive and were towed away.
