Kiel (dpa / lno) - By the end of the year, 97 percent of schools in Schleswig-Holstein should be connected to the fiber optic network.

He is grateful to Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) and Digitization Minister Jan-Philipp Albrecht (Greens) that the remaining 30 schools have been regulated “how they will be supplied with fast internet in the next two years,” said Economics Minister Bernd Buchholz (FDP) on Thursday.

The corona pandemic shows the need for faster internet connections.

"Parallel applications - whether in the company, for home office or homeschooling - require both stable and high bandwidths for downloading and uploading."

According to Buchholz, 53 percent of households in Schleswig-Holstein can now be connected to the fiber optic network.

38 percent have already booked this, said Buchholz.

He expects that at least 62 percent of households will be able to use fiber optics by 2022.

The national average is twelve percent.

"So far, we have 18,100 kilometers of fiber optics in operation, a further 16,200 kilometers are specifically planned, 724 communities have been successfully connected to the fiber-optic network and construction is currently underway in 124 communities."

The state government wants to re-regulate the additional cost privilege through a Federal Council initiative in order to advance the expansion of fiber optics in the cities.

The point is whether tenants in apartment buildings will have to continue to pay for their internet-enabled TV cable connection via the apportionable additional costs.

"With our variant, the way should be cleared for fiber optic connections via which not only fast Internet, but also television can reach the apartments," said Buchholz.

He wants only investments in fiber optic infrastructure that are open to all providers to remain chargeable in apartment buildings.
