Munich (dpa / lby) - Because of the corona pandemic, according to the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) in Bavaria, fewer men went to cancer screening.

"Bavaria's men: They are and will remain cancer prevention muffle", writes TK in a press release.

In the first half of 2020, 10.6 percent of the men insured with TK attended an early detection appointment.

That is around two percentage points less than in the same period last year.

"The Bavarian men are sliding from penultimate to last place in the federal state comparison," said Christian Bredl, head of TK in Bavaria.

According to TK, cancer is responsible for every fourth death among men in the Free State.

Whether the numbers were also down in the third and fourth quarters will not be known until early summer of this year, when the health insurance company has the data.

The quota for Bavarian women also fell by five percentage points in the first half of 2020 compared to the previous year, to 25.4 percent.

In a country comparison, however, women in the Free State slipped from 14th to seventh place.

According to the health insurance company, cancer is responsible for every fifth death among women.

TK has evaluated the pension data in Bavaria for almost 900,000 eligible insured persons;

nationwide of around seven million.

Across Germany, the numbers also fell compared to the previous year.

Barmer also assumes a decrease in cancer screening examinations due to Corona.

"I recommend everyone who has postponed their cancer screening out of fear of infection or because the doctor's office is not open, to make up for the important examinations as soon as possible," said Claudia Wöhler, state manager of Barmer in Bavaria.

"Under no circumstances should one wait for the end of the pandemic, in an emergency, valuable time could be lost."
