Velbert (dpa / lnw) - Unknown people tried to drop trees on a railway line in Velbert, south of Essen.

The police in Mettmann reported on Thursday that tree trunks that had been cut or sawed over a distance of several kilometers were discovered.

On Tuesday, a 41-year-old walker in the dark surprised a man who was sawing a tree right next to the railway line.

The young, sporty man had fled into the forest when the witness illuminated him with a flashlight.

Despite using a helicopter and several patrol cars, he escaped.

His motive is completely unclear.

Because he wore a hood, the walker could not describe him in more detail.

The S-Bahn traffic on the route between Wuppertal and Essen was blocked for three hours.

The fire brigade had to fell the sawn tree and remove it from the danger area.

On Wednesday it was found that trees were being cut and even sawed off at other points on S-Bahn line 9 in Velbert.

A train driver reported this because a tree top protruded into the track area.

The police are investigating attempted dangerous interventions in rail traffic and are hoping for witnesses who can provide information about the perpetrator (s).
