Brandenburg / Havel (dpa / bb) - A burning Christmas tree caused a bang and shocks in an apartment building in Brandenburg an der Havel.

Two tenants suffered severe, but not life-threatening burn injuries in the fire on Tuesday evening, the police said.

They had already extinguished the fire when the fire brigade arrived and came to a special hospital in Berlin for treatment.

The cause of the bang was therefore a deflagration.

It was initially unclear why the sudden pressure wave came about.

Damage occurred to the walls and the ceiling of an apartment below.

A structural engineer was called in so that all apartments could remain habitable.

The police are now investigating suspicions of negligent arson.
