Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin Senate has increased the learning aids for particularly disadvantaged children and adolescents in the Corona lockdown that were launched a few weeks ago.

Instead of the 20 teams initially planned, 35 mobile units are now helping the residents of residential groups and youth welfare homes with learning at home and with leisure activities.

Around 760 children and young people in 119 residential groups are currently being supported, as Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD) announced on Wednesday.

She justified the increase in the program with the great demand.

In the course of the project, experienced teachers and other specialists support the students with individual solutions, advice and motivation.

The offers include digital learning groups, individual coaching via telephone or internet, networking with older students or personal “stairwell and window discussions”.

The “Mobile Youth Learning Aid.Now” program is supported by the German Children and Youth Foundation (DKJS).

According to current planning, it should run until the Easter holidays.

Initially, the education administration had provided 650,000 euros for this, the sum has now been increased to 840,000 euros.

Around 100 tablets are also available on loan.

Scheeres explained that Berlin was a pioneer nationwide with the program.

“Especially in the pandemic, we mustn't forget children and young people who live in institutions.

Many need support with learning, there is a lack of social contacts and leisure activities. "

The mobile teams could provide targeted help and thus also relieve the educators in the facilities.

In the lockdown, Berlin's schools have been largely closed for weeks.
