Koblenz (dpa / lrs) - After an ax attack on his mother, a man was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Koblenz district court for manslaughter.

As a spokeswoman for the court said, the judges ordered on Wednesday that the 38-year-old man should be placed in a psychiatric hospital.

In August 2020, he is said to have attacked his 61-year-old mother in the shared house in Mudersbach in the Westerwald, first with a knife and then with an ax.

The woman was so badly injured that she bled to death.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.

The man convicted on Wednesday had stood trial for the crime.

According to his own account, he could no longer remember exactly what happened.

The public prosecutor's office had asked for a prison sentence of ten years, and the defense pleaded for a prison sentence of seven years.

Both the prosecution and the defense had spoken out in favor of the accused being placed in a psychiatric hospital.
