The facts took place on the night of January 12 to 13.

That evening in Sélestat, in Haut-Rhin, the police had been called in the context of domestic violence.

A 25-year-old man was arrested, before being placed in a cell at the city police station and dying of cardiac arrest.

An officer then performed cardiac massage, and officials also used a defibrillator.

Then the Samu had taken over, without being able to revive him.

"Absence of suspicious traumatic lesion suggestive of violence"

What is this dead death due to?

The Colmar prosecutor's office said Wednesday it had opened an investigation "into the causes of death".

The investigation, opened in the hours following the death, but which has only just been announced publicly, was entrusted to both the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) and the Strasbourg judicial police.

An autopsy was carried out and its first conclusions indicate an "absence of suspicious traumatic lesion suggestive of violence", specified the public prosecutor of Colmar, Catherine Sorita-Minard, confirming information from the newspaper L'Alsace.

According to the daily, the cell where he was placed was equipped with surveillance cameras.

The images are being used by investigators.

The man could have been injured while initially trying to escape his arrest and would have jumped from a balcony.
