The planning of many schools, despite the weeks of restricted teaching, to give school-free around Rose Monday, has triggered frustration among parents.

The displeasure in the families is understandable, many parents have already used up a large part of their entire annual vacation for the school care of their children at home, said the chairman of the state parents' conference, Anke Schaar, of the German press agency on Wednesday.

Many schools would have decided on Rose Monday on the 15th and the following Tuesday a long time ago as moving holidays and agreed this with the municipalities.

The "Westfalen-Blatt" also reported criticism from parents.

Schaar explained that schools could change resolutions on moving public holidays at short notice.

"Parents can also ask the schools to call a school conference if there is an urgency." Given the current difficult conditions, this would be a particularly high effort.

According to the state parents' conference, there are also some schools that wanted to forego the planned carnival-free school days.

In view of the great challenges in the entire school year, in which no return to normalcy is expected, the question arises, according to Schaar, whether a few days “make the cabbage still fat”.

According to previous resolutions by the federal and state governments, the current lockdown will apply until February 14;

many therefore hope for a gradual return to face-to-face teaching from February 15th.

School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) had recommended schools several weeks ago not to take the carnival holidays.

The days could be used to rework course content.

At normal times, schools often put moving holidays on one or more carnival days from Weiberfastnacht.

The teachers' union GEW said on Wednesday: “We have every understanding of the stressful situation in the families.” Nevertheless, there is no reason to change anything because of one or a few school-free days at Carnival “in the long-standing regulations that the schools do too have synchronized the municipalities ".
