Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The Left in the Magdeburg state parliament has called for school operations to start earlier than planned.

The gradual opening should begin after the winter holidays on February 15, demanded left parliamentary group leader Thomas Lippmann on Wednesday.

In view of the current infection rate, it is completely incomprehensible why the Ministry of Education only wanted to start two weeks later.

The teachers' union GEW, however, criticized the opening plans as premature.

Only when there are fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per week can there be nationwide classroom teaching, the union said on Wednesday.

Both refer to a concept that Education Minister Marco Tullner (CDU) announced on Tuesday: According to this, the schools in all districts should reopen for all age groups if there are fewer than 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week for five school days.

Elementary and special school pupils then learn every day with a permanently assigned teacher.

At all other types of school, the classes should be divided into groups, the pupils then learn alternately in school and at home.

Similar rules already applied after the first lockdown in April 2020.

In circles that report fewer than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week for a school week, regular lessons should be possible again.

If the value rises above 200 again, there is distance instruction.

Except for Anhalt-Bitterfeld and the Burgenland district, all districts already met the conditions for the first opening stage, criticized the left-wing opposition politician Lippmann.

"Every day longer in the hard lockdown affects the development of children and young people and puts a strain on families."

GEW country manager Eva Gerth, on the other hand, spoke of a "considerable additional burden with high health risks" for the teachers.
