  • The start of the winter sales is very disappointing for most of the businesses in central Bordeaux.

  • They recorded decreases ranging from -20% to -40% in turnover, compared to the 2020 sales.

  • Almost a quarter of the merchants surveyed now offer their customers “click and collect” services.

Even very aggressive discounts will not have saved the day.

According to the latest survey conducted by the Bordeaux-Gironde CCI, on January 27 and 28 with 128 merchants in downtown Bordeaux, the start of the winter sales is far from meeting expectations.

Some 92.8% of the traders surveyed declared that their trade was lower, or even much lower, than in the past.

"Attendance has fallen by 30 to 70% depending on the neighborhood compared to 2020, and it is very sensitive during the Intendance, rue Porte-Dijeaux and rue Sainte-Catherine" notes the study.

This drop in attendance has a direct impact on the turnover achieved: almost nine out of ten merchants (86.5%) say that it is lower than last year.

The announced reductions range from -20% to -40% compared to the winter 2020 sales, despite significant discounts from the first week.

“A third of traders have not been able to adjust their stock order, and find themselves with large quantities of merchandise to sell,” further analyzes the CCI.

Impacted by the 6 p.m. curfew

In addition, more than six out of ten traders feel “strongly, even very strongly” impacted by the 6 pm curfew.

Almost a quarter of the merchants surveyed now offer their customers "click and collect" or "call and collect" services, whereas they did not have them previously.

"This does not prevent the professionals questioned from fearing an irreversible change in purchasing habits to the detriment of the city center of Bordeaux, and the appearance of new brownfields in the coming months" concludes the chamber of commerce.
