Gütersloh (dpa / lnw) - In North Rhine-Westphalia, more rehabilitation sports for stroke patients are to be created nationwide.

The German Stroke Foundation is funding the founding of new sports groups with 500 euros each, which can help people return to a healthy and self-determined life after a stroke.

Partners in the project are the State Sports Association, the Disabled and Rehabilitation Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and the state.

At least one club per district or urban district should be supported, for example in the training of exercise leaders.

However, funds are available for up to 70 new groups in the next two years, said the initiative on Wednesday.

Sports clubs can apply for funding until the end of April.

In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, 60,000 people suffer a stroke every year.

So far there are 43 sports groups for those affected by the sports associations.

There, safe walking, memory or new everyday movements are trained together.

With a significantly expanded and comprehensive offer, North Rhine-Westphalia would become a model nationwide in the field of rehabilitation sports for stroke patients, said Michael Brinkmeier, chairman of the foundation.
