Melbourne (AP) - The German tennis players around top professional Alexander Zverev made their start at the ATP Cup against Canada successfully.

Both Hamburg's Zverev against Denis Shapovalov and Jan-Lennard Struff against Milos Raonic won their singles at the Australian Open in Melbourne and secured the team's first victory in the group stage with the two points.

Struff defeated Raonic in two sets 7: 6 (7: 4), 7: 6 (7: 2), Zverev had to turn a deficit against Shapovalov and defeated the 21-year-old in the end 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 4).

Canada had already lost to Novak Djokovic's Serbia the day before.

The German professionals compete against the defending champions on the third day of the match.

The winner of this clash wins group A and moves on to the semifinals of the top-class nations tournament with twelve participating countries.
