China: WHO team visiting Wuhan

Experts from the World Health Organization arrived at the Wuhan virology institute as part of the investigation into the origin of the coronavirus in the megalopolis of central China.

The institute has several high-security labs where researchers are working on coronaviruses.

The expert group is led by Peter Ben Embarek.

"I am counting on an extremely productive day, meeting with key figures and being able to ask the questions that need to be asked," commented another member of the WHO team, Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance.

Meanwhile, China's National Health Commission has announced the detection of 25 new coronavirus positives, 15 of which were caused by a local infection.

These 25 infections show a downward trend compared to 30 the previous day and 42 the day before.

The data continues to worry authorities as China is preparing for the Lunar New Year travel season, even as restrictions and fear of epidemics have discouraged many Chinese from moving.

To avoid possible infections during this period, the Asian country continues to advance its vaccination campaign, which aims to immunize up to 50 million Chinese before the arrival of the Year of the Ox on February 12.

Mexico approves the Russian vaccine

Mexico approved the use of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, hours after the publication of the first results of an advanced study indicating an efficacy of approximately 91%.

Assistant Health Secretary Hugo Lopez-Gatell, a government spokesperson against the pandemic, said the health ministry signed a contract on Monday for 400,000 doses of Sputnik V to arrive this month.

However, this is a small amount for the more than 126 million Mexicans.

The Central American country is going through a period of particular difficulty due to the pandemic with 87% full hospitals in the capital and ambulance drivers who have to wait hours to find a bed for patients.

Mexico has reported around 159,500 confirmed Covid deaths, but estimates place the real toll at well over 195,000.
