Bremen (AP) - Werder Bremen has reached the quarter-finals in the DFB Cup for the fourth time in a row.

The Bundesliga club won against second division club SpVgg Greuther Fürth 2-0 (1-0) and with the success also gained confidence in the fight against relegation in the first division.

Kevin Möhwald (12th minute) and Felix Agu (73rd) scored the goals for the green-whites in the ice-cold and rainy Weserstadion.

Getting ahead is also very important for the Bremen team from a financial point of view.

The effects of the coronavirus pandemic have torn huge gaps in the coffers of northern Germans.

And since the club was no longer able to generate any revenue from transfers in the transfer period that ended on Monday, the cup proceeds will definitely help.

In contrast to the 1-1 draw against FC Schalke 04 in the league, Bremen were wide awake against Fürth from the start and put the guests from Franconia under pressure with a courageous game.

Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt had this time on routine instead of youth.

Ludwig Augustinsson returned to the starting eleven for Felix Agu and Kevin Möhwald for Jean-Manuel Mbom.

And it was Möhwald who brought the green-whites into the lead in the twelfth minute.

After Fürth's goalkeeper Sascha Burchert was able to parry a powerful header from Milos Veljkovic after a corner, Möhwald dusted off to make it 1-0.

Werder stayed on the trigger after that and was unlucky that Augustinsson hit the post shortly after the lead.

After around 25 minutes, the second division was able to free itself more and more and became dangerous a few times.

But the Fürth team did not get a real chance to score before the break.

Even after the break, Werder initially had a great chance to extend their lead through Augustinsson (51st).

But because the favorite did not make the second goal at first, the game remained exciting.

Fürth had two great opportunities to equalize through Anton Stach (55th) and Sebastian Ernst (60th).

But then Agu, who had only recently been substituted on, made everything clear to a pass from Josh Sargent.

In the final phase, Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka prevented the Franconians from scoring the next goal with a reflex after a shot by Robin Kehr (85th).
