Mainz (dpa) - Because of “not clearly defined statements” in the club's statutes, the Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 is postponing its general meeting.

This was originally supposed to take place on February 9th, with elections for the chairmanship and supervisory board.

Ambiguities now arose in connection with the number of admitted applicants by the election commission.

"Criticism among the members of the association was particularly caused by the fact that the electoral commission left four of the maximum of 16 applicants for the supervisory board vacant in 28 applications and did not nominate four previous supervisory board members," the association said.

Honorary President Harald Strutz is one of the critics.

"I have the impression that the club is degenerating into a scheming barn," said the 70-year-old former club boss of the "Bild" newspaper.

The current chairman of the association, Stefan Hofmann, said in a statement on Tuesday: "According to the legal assessments available to us, our election commission acted in accordance with the statutes."

However, the club registered "that there are other opinions on this".

That is why the board wants to have proposals for "clarifying statutes" drawn up at short notice.

If these are legitimized, “the elections for the chairmanship of the association and the supervisory board can be held”.

A new date has not yet been set.
