Kiel (AP) - The penalty specialists from Holstein Kiel have delivered their next masterpiece in the DFB Cup.

20 days after the drama against Bayern Munich, the North Germans prevailed 7: 6 (1: 1, 0: 0) against second division rivals Darmstadt 98 in the round of 16 on penalties.

The hero of the evening was defender Simon Lorenz, who converted the decisive penalty against Darmstadt goalkeeper Marcel Schuhe.

Janni Serra (58th) for Kiel and Serdar Dursun (86th) for Darmstadt had scored in regular time.

For the last time, Kiel had reached the quarter-finals in 2012.

"The madness continues," said Kiel midfielder Fin Bartels after the game.

His coach Ole Werner, on the other hand, was much more clarified: "It was a competitive match at eye level," said the 32-year-old: "In the penalty shootout, the happier team wins at the end of the day."

Darmstadt's trainer Markus Anfang, who led Holstein into the 2nd Bundesliga in 2017, was disappointed: "It's incredibly bitter for us because we played a really good game."

Both coaches had made several changes in the starting line-up.

As expected, Lorenz took the place of the injured Marco Komenda in central defense at Kiel, while midfielder Victor Palsson played from the beginning at Darmstadt for the first time since November last year.

The fireworks, which had been set off behind the Holstein Stadium before kick-off, initially failed to appear on the lawn.

Despite an early opportunity from Fabian Reese (3rd), the hosts struggled to find their way into the game.

Darmstadt played courageously and could have taken the lead when ex-Kieler Mathias Honsak (9th) shot it from the post.

The third place in the table only gradually took control, but there were hardly any clear opportunities.

Alexander Mühling's shot (15th) was too unplaced, Fabian Reese (16th) was separated from the ball by 98 keeper shoes at the edge of the penalty area.

It is indicative that the “storks” 'lead resulted from a switchover situation.

Reese played the ball from his own half to Serra, who lobbed the ball nervously over shoes after a long sprint.

When Dursun, who had been substituted three minutes earlier, equalized, the Hessen benefited from a mistake by Holstein keeper Ioannis Gelios.

In the penalty shoot-out, the 28-year-old German-Greek became a hero again with two shots saved alongside Lorenz.

Gelios parried against Marvin Mehlem and Honsak.

Darmstadt's Tim Skarke shot to the left of the gate.

On the Kiel side, Hauke Wahl and Niklas Hauptmann failed because of shoes.
