Berlin (dpa / bb) - After the water ingress in a construction pit in Berlin-Köpenick, the first residents should be able to return to the surrounding buildings.

"For security reasons, only part of the street will initially be released for residents," said the district office on Tuesday morning.

«During the night we continued to work intensively on the support measures for the houses in Pohlestrasse that were in danger of collapsing.

The crane work continues », it said in the message.

On Sunday evening, a building pit was flooded with water, and 18 surrounding houses were cleared.

Around 330 people had to leave their homes.

Around two-thirds of people could return to their homes on Tuesday morning, said a spokeswoman for the district office.

Other houses are to remain closed for the time being, because the pit and surrounding gable sides still have to be secured.

The work is expected to last until the evening.
