Munich (dpa / lby) - The Bavarian Cancer Society calls for cancer patients to be vaccinated against Covid-19 much earlier than previously planned.

According to the ordinance of the federal government, people with cancer and their relatives are usually only assigned to group 3 with higher priority, the company announced on Tuesday.

"We consider the current regulation of the prioritization of vaccinations to be inappropriate, as it excludes immunocompromised and particularly vulnerable people with cancer," criticized Günter Schlimok, President of the Bavarian Cancer Society.

"Cancer patients with a new, progressive, or metastatic disease have a poorer prognosis if they contract Covid-19."

Especially those affected with blood or lung cancer, but also with severe organ damage, would often have severe disease courses and a significantly increased risk of death if they were infected with corona.

"These hardship cases can be prevented by an early vaccination," said Schlimok.

There are various factors that can influence a severe course of Covid-19.

These include the type of cancer, therapy, age and physical condition as well as previous illnesses of the patient.

These aspects are not considered in the current vaccination strategy of the federal government.

This means that many cancer patients in Germany are in a doubly life-threatening situation as long as they are not vaccinated.
