Wilkau-Haßlau (dpa / sn) - For the former Haribo plant in Wilkau-Haßlau, there seems to be a perspective in the confectionery industry.

Saxony's Minister of Economics, Martin Dulig, announced on Tuesday that Katjes was considering taking over the plant.

In the past week he had "many good and intensive discussions" with the Katjes management.

The company from Emmerich am Rhein (North Rhine-Westphalia) produces rubber confectionery and liquorice similar to Haribo.

Haribo ceased production in Wilkau-Haßlau at the end of 2020 - its only plant in East Germany.

Around 150 employees are affected.

A social plan was decided for them.

There were angry protests against the closure of the site.

The contact to the Haribo competitor Katjes was arranged through the SPD leader Norbert Walter-Borjans and the former Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks (SPD).

According to Dulig, Katjes now wants to examine the purchase of the location "if it is possible to produce her vegetarian products in Wilkau-Haßlau".
