Erfurt / Weimar (dpa / th) - The demand from leading art museums to open houses earlier in the pandemic has been cautiously received in Thuringia.

"Museums are without question part of the basic cultural supply," said the President of the Thuringian Museum Association, Thomas T. Müller.

"Nevertheless, the unconditional containment of the pandemic is currently the only focus."

Especially when looking at the mutations of the virus, which are spreading ever further, the first priority must be to protect the health of visitors and employees.

Before that, the management of leading art museums nationwide had written a letter to support the opening of the houses.

"Our concern is to contain the pandemic, but also to reopen the museums adapted to the course of Corona," it says.

Museums are safe places in which hygiene measures are strictly followed and monitored “like no other public place”.
