Berlin (dpa / bb) - The schools, daycare centers and youth welfare facilities in Berlin are to receive another 680,000 protective masks due to the ongoing corona pandemic.

The Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family announced on Tuesday after the Senate approved the concept.

The FFP2 or KN95 masks are intended for employees who work in the facilities between the winter and Easter holidays.

Distribution is slated to begin within the next week.

A total of 350,000 are earmarked for schools, 260,000 for daycare and around 70,000 for inpatient youth and integration assistance.

According to the Senate Administration, around 500,000 euros are available for the purchase.

"We want to protect the employees who work in schools and daycare centers as well as in residential groups during the lockdown," said Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD).

"At the same time, we are making preparations for the time afterwards, when schools and daycare centers gradually return to face-to-face and regular operations."

When that is possible depends on the development of the corona pandemic.

According to the Senate Department, Berlin last delivered 1.75 million simple mouth and nose protective masks and around 100,000 FFP2 masks for educational staff in schools in December.

8.3 million mouth and nose protective masks have been provided for secondary school students.
