"A little glimmer of hope".

Four days after a first assessment drawn up by AFP, the Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti confirmed the drop in the number of feminicides committed in 2020. In a video posted on his Facebook account, the Minister of Justice announced on Tuesday that 90 women were killed by their spouses or ex-spouses in 2020, a figure well below that recorded the previous year.

In 2019, 146 feminicides were recorded by the government.

"We have obtained these results, they are still too modest but they are bearers of hope", declared the minister in his video.

However, the Minister of Justice recalled that "each homicide, each violence is a failure (…) for our entire society, it is a failure for the Ministry of Justice".

In total in 2020, "106 crimes were perpetrated and 90 victims are women," he said.

Lowest balance since 2006

The figure for 2020 is the lowest since the government began counting feminicides in 2006, but associations agree that it is still too early to see a lasting trend.

According to the elements collected by AFP, which studied for 2019 and 2020 all cases of suspected feminicides in France, the murders of women by their spouses or exs did not particularly decrease during confinements linked to the Covid health crisis. 19.

On the other hand, the coronavirus epidemic and its periods of confinement have highlighted the importance of the violence suffered by women and children in their homes, boosting reports of these facts.

The considerable drop in the number of feminicides "is undoubtedly due to the view that the whole of society bears on this domestic violence and these heinous crimes, it is also due to the work of associations", also said Mr. Dupond-Moretti.

Systematic feedback

Sign that this scourge has become major in society, the Chancellery requested for the first time in 2020 systematic feedback to the general prosecutors for each domestic homicide, in order to have "a more precise follow-up" of these murders and "to evaluate the impact of the Grenelle measures ”.

This is the first time that the Chancellery has announced figures.

After a strong association mobilization, a "Grenelle" to fight against domestic violence had resulted at the end of 2019 in around forty measures, among which the deployment of anti-reunification bracelets for violent spouses or ex-spouses or "lessons learned" Between professionals concerned after each feminicide.
