Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Wireless communication of vehicles with traffic signs and traffic lights as well as digital working methods when planning, building and operating construction measures.

In Baden-Württemberg this should not just be a dream of the future, which is why the state is investing ten million euros in the digitization of the road traffic infrastructure and road construction administration, as the Ministry of Transport and State announced in Stuttgart on Tuesday.

Specifically, the construction of a nationwide traffic light cloud and the modernization of the traffic light systems are to be supported with five million euros in 2021/22.

Intelligent traffic control is an important preliminary stage to autonomous driving, said Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann.

Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (both Greens) declared that the traffic flows could be better directed through the digitization of road traffic.

Money is also flowing into setting up a completely digital working method for planning, building and operating construction measures.

According to the announcement, the road construction administration will receive an additional three million euros for the planned software and hardware equipment in 2021/22.

Two million euros would be invested in the implementation of specific projects.
