Hamburg (dpa / lno) - As of today, the route in the city center of Hamburg's subway line 3 will no longer be accessible for more than a year.

The background is construction work on the more than 100-year-old route between the Rathausmarkt and Rödingsmarkt stops, which is due to start at the beginning of the week.

Specifically, the U3 between the main station (south) and baumall will be blocked.

The Mönckebergstraße, Rathaus and Rödingsmarkt stops will not be used during this time, according to the Hochbahn.

They are being renovated - because the U3 is to become barrier-free in the city center.

By the end of March 2022, among other things, the tunnel exit of the U3 at Mönkedamm will be completely renewed between the main station and baumall.

The 861 meter long tunnel is also getting a beauty treatment.

Costs of around 86 million are currently planned for the renovation and expansion.

According to the Hochbahn, the S-Bahn and numerous bus lines are replacing them.

The U3 line between St. Pauli and South Central Station had been closed for building preparations from Friday to Sunday.
