Berlin (dpa / bb) - The number of online vehicle registrations in Berlin has increased significantly over the past year.

While there were only 81 in January, 469 were recorded when the first lockdown began in March and 895 in June.

This results from the answer of the Senate Department for Transport to a written request from the Greens parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, which became known on Monday.

There was another jump to 1868 online vehicle registrations in September after the Senate had waived the electronic identity card as a prerequisite for the process.

The highest number was finally reached in December at 2,647.

A total of 14,820 online applications were processed last year.

The exception rule, according to which Berliners can register, re-register and de-register their car with a copy of their identity card as a scan using an online form, or change their address, for example, is limited to June 30, 2021.

After that, online admission is likely to become more complicated again.

In the summer in particular, there had been several discussions and a lot of trouble in Berlin over weeks of waiting times for dealers and private customers who wanted to register cars.

Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) then announced that he would dispense with the electronic identity card for the online vehicle registration process.
