The Russian police proceeded Sunday to more than 5,000 arrests and blocked the center of several cities, including Moscow, during new demonstrations in Russia to demand the release of the opponent Alexeï Navalny.

These arrests were immediately condemned by the United States, the European Union and Canada.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken regretted the “brutal tactics” of the police against “peaceful demonstrators”, with Russian diplomacy denouncing “gross interference” by the United States in its “internal affairs”.

Anti-corruption activist and sworn enemy of the Kremlin, Alexei Navalny, 44, returned to Russia on January 17 after months of convalescence in Germany for suspected poisoning, for which he accuses Vladimir Putin.
