During new demonstrations in Russia for the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, more than 5,000 people were arrested by Sunday afternoon, according to human rights activists.

The security forces in heavy gear were sometimes brutal.

In the metropolis of St. Petersburg, the police reportedly used tear gas and stun guns.

An officer threatened with his weapon.

Photos from Kazan on the Volga about 700 kilometers east of Moscow showed several demonstrators who had to lie in front of police officers on a house wall in the snow.

Navalny's wife Julia Navalnaya was also arrested during the mass protests in Moscow.

She was only released in the evening.

The 44-year-old had previously published a photo of herself on the street on Instagram.

In another entry with a family photo, she criticized the fact that her husband was imprisoned for daring to survive the assassination attempt with the chemical warfare agent Novichok.

She had already been temporarily arrested during protests a week ago.

Navalnaya also complained that Alexey's brother Oleg Navalny had been taken into custody as a "hostage".

“If we keep silent, then tomorrow they will fetch each of us.” She accused President Vladimir Putin of determining the fate of people at will - he decides “who is locked up and who is poisoned”.

When Nawalnaya was arrested, supporters criticized the fact that she was arbitrarily taken away by the police, as the Internet channel Doschd showed.

The massive crackdown on opposition protesters by the Russian security forces has sparked a violent diplomatic dispute between Moscow and Washington.

The Kremlin accused the US on Sunday of "gross interference" in Russia's internal affairs.

In a statement on Facebook, the State Department in Moscow also criticized the spread of false information through “online platforms controlled by Washington”.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had previously condemned the “harsh” reaction of the Russian authorities to the protests initiated by the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexej Navalny.

"We renew our call to Russia to release those arrested for exercising their human rights," wrote Blinken on Twitter.

Nawalny's supporters protested against the detention of the Kremlin opponent in Berlin as well.

According to the police, there was a smaller and a larger demonstration on Sunday, the number of participants was not given.

In one action, a demonstrator disguised himself as President Vladimir Putin was shown behind bars - this was meant as a demand to bring Putin to justice before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Freedom for Navalny was demanded on banners.

The goal of the larger demo was the Russian Embassy on Unter den Linden.
