Berlin (dpa / bb) - With a mixture of coat and sleeping bag, Caritas wants to protect homeless people from the cold in Berlin.

For the time being, 80 so-called sheltersuits made of wind- and water-repellent material are to be distributed to homeless people in Berlin from Monday.

«The sheltersuits are more of an emergency aid.

The real goal is to get the people off the streets, ”said a Caritas spokesman.

The warming garment, which consists of old sleeping bags and tents, among other things, should protect people from freezing to death.

For this purpose, homeless people are to be visited across Berlin.

"Our employees know very well where the homeless are and who needs help," said the spokesman.

The campaign takes place in collaboration with the Dutch Sheltersuit Foundation, whose founder Bas Timmer designed the garment.

Due to the corona pandemic, the situation for homeless people in Berlin has worsened because cold rooms are closed, for example.

The first homeless census in Berlin last January recorded around 2000 people.

Social associations estimate the number to be higher.

A total of around 1,000 emergency overnight stays are available to them as part of the cold aid.
