Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Education Marco Tullner has called for teachers to be given preference when vaccinating against the corona virus.

To stabilize the system, it is important to have vaccinated staff in the schools, the CDU politician told the German press agency on Monday.

He reacted to announcements by Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) to adjust the imposition.

Several priority levels are assigned to different risk and occupational groups.

The vaccinations against the virus have been running for a month; currently only the first group is authorized: people over 80 years old as well as employees in clinics, nursing homes and care services.

Teachers are currently ranked third.

When this will be vaccinated is unclear.

Due to delivery bottlenecks and renegotiations on the vaccine, the forecasts about the further delivery quantities change very frequently.

On Monday, the federal and state governments want to exchange views on the current situation at a so-called vaccination summit.

"I think it would be wise to assign teachers to vaccination category 2," said Education Minister Tullner.

The sooner teachers are vaccinated, the sooner schools can work regardless of the current situation, he argued.

The CDU politician receives support from the opposition in the state parliament: They expect the state government to campaign for educational staff to be upgraded, said left parliamentary group leader Eva von Angern on Monday.

"I think it's extremely problematic that teachers are only in the third group."

The question of vaccinations has so far been neglected in the considerations for reopening schools.

In Saxony-Anhalt the schools and daycare centers have been in emergency mode since mid-December and will remain so for at least two weeks.

Only the graduating classes receive face-to-face tuition, all other pupils receive tasks for at home and online offers.

At the daycare centers there is emergency care for parents with systemically relevant professions.

The closings are intended to help, with many other restrictions, to finally slow down the spread of the coronavirus and contain the pathogen.
