Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The Düsseldorf way of having all positive corona tests checked for mutations will not be a nationwide practice for the time being.

North Rhine-Westphalia adheres to the federal regulation, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Health on Monday at the request of the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf.

"The ordinance provides that, depending on the number of new infections, five to ten percent of the SARS-CoV-2 positive samples are sequenced."

The state capital, however, has had all positive PCR samples from the test center and the city's mobile services also checked for virus mutations since Monday.

Last week, the state government gave the go-ahead for a scientific study on the spread of corona mutations in North Rhine-Westphalia.

It is particularly about the British and the South African variants.

The British virus mutation is believed to be more contagious than the original variant.

The investigation is being carried out at the Institute for Hygiene at the Münster University Hospital and is funded with 200,000 euros.
