Rostock (dpa) - The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Rostock has published its first ice report of the season for the Baltic Sea.

As the office reported on Monday, there are reports of thin new ice for Schleswig, Neustadt Hafen, the Zingster Strom, the area around Greifswald and the Danish Wiek and from the Peene River.

In other protected areas of the German Baltic Sea coast, new ice or new ice formation also occurs.

Since temperatures below freezing point are still to be expected and the wind is mostly weak, new ice will continue to form in protected areas.

In the coming days, the ice could last with rising temperatures, said the BSH oceanographer Jürgen Holfort.

Last winter, the BSH did not issue an ice report due to a lack of ice.
