Hamburg (dpa / lno).

Round-the-world sailor Boris Herrmann is back in Hamburg.

After driving the family at night, the 39-year-old arrived in his hometown at 5 a.m. on Monday.

He entered his private apartment in HafenCity for the first time since the end of October last year.

«I was really looking forward to my own four walls.

That's what I longed for.

It is a very, very nice feeling to be back home, ”said the Oldenburg native of the German press agency.

In the small family circle with his wife Birte Lorenzen-Herrmann, daughter Marie-Louise and family dog Lilli, the Vendée Globe fifth wants to recover from the rigors of solo circumnavigation in the coming days.

In view of his extraordinary trip, his team was initially unable to determine which corona quarantine rules Herrmann must adhere to.

After 80 days on the oceans, less than five days in France on land and the journey home in a family car, it was unclear which regulations would apply to the professional athlete who was initially at home.

After ZDF and ARD had already shown extensive features and reports by Herrmann at the weekend, Boris Herrmann is expected to perform in the current sports studio next Saturday.

Further talk show appearances are planned.

Herrmann arrived on Thursday in Les Sables d'Olonne, France, with his yacht "Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco".

He was the first German to take part in the toughest regatta in the world.

On his trip, Herrmann repeatedly provided insights on board via social media, spoke with the media or with children.

One day before crossing the finish line, he caused a stir with a collision with a Spanish fishing ship.

Due to the accident, he missed the chance of a podium.
