Mainz (dpa) - The vaccine manufacturer Biontech wants to produce two billion doses of its vaccine in 2021 and thus increase the previously expected production of 1.3 billion doses by more than 50 percent.

"We are on the right track to expand our production capacities," announced the company on Monday in Mainz.

The renovations at Pfizer's Belgian plant in Puurs have been successfully completed.

"Now we are back on schedule for delivering vaccine doses to the European Union."

Pfizer and Biontech would continue to work on increased delivery volumes - from the week of February 15th.

They want to ensure that in the first quarter the amount of vaccine doses that they have contractually agreed to meet - and in the second quarter up to 75 million more doses can be delivered to the European Union.

The Biontech plant in Marburg, Hesse, has received a license and wants to start production in February.

“Thirdly, we have continuously expanded our European manufacturing network - from three partners in December 2020, when we received the first approvals, to 13 now including the plant in Marburg.

We will further strengthen this network and are in talks with additional partners, ”said Biontech.
