Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The state of Hesse is funding six research projects with almost 40 million euros in the next few years in order to strengthen the universities in nationwide competition.

"We want to promote excellent research that boldly focuses on profile and cooperation," said Science Minister Angela Dorn (Greens) on Monday.

"So that the universities have better chances in the next round of the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments, we asked them for concept proposals," explained the minister.

After the assessment by experts, six projects from the universities in Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Gießen and Marburg were selected.

Research will be carried out on artificial intelligence, energy and conflict (AI) as well as in the field of particle physics, molecular biomedicine and cognitive neurosciences.

According to the ministry, the universities cooperate with each other, with other universities or with research institutions in most projects.

Dorn was confident that "we have succeeded in identifying the initiatives that have a good chance of asserting themselves in the excellence competition."

The state funding should help the universities to «strategically expand strong research areas in order to successfully apply for funding as a cluster of excellence in the next round of the excellence strategy planned for 2024», the ministry said.

From April, the projects will receive between 4.8 and 8 million euros from the state over the next four years.

Together with the co-financing of the universities, each project would have around 10 to 17 million euros available.
