On April 24, 1990, the optical telescope was launched into space, and since then it has traveled 6.5 billion kilometers around the earth - 15-16 revolutions per day.

Hubble's images have led to several notable discoveries.

The close-ups have shown how stars are born and die.

It has also been possible to assess how old the universe is.

The images became blurry

But the road there was far from straight.

At the start, astronomers around the world waited anxiously to see amazing images from space, but what came back was blurred.

The camera lens was sharpened.

Kathryn Thornton was one of the astronauts who was given the dangerous task of going into space and replacing the incorrectly sharpened camera lens.

- I did not worry about injuring myself or disappearing into space.

I just did not want to mess up, she says in the world of Science: "Hubble - with my eye on space".

In use longer than expected

When Hubble was launched into space, the estimated lifespan was 15 years.

Now it has been in use for over 30 years.

In May 2009, the last expedition was sent to Hubble for one last time to perform repairs and maintenance.
