Göttingen (dpa) - After an extensive mass evacuation, four World War II bombs were detonated in a controlled manner in Göttingen.

The ten hundredweight long detonator bombs had been found during exploratory work.

A spokesman for the city of Göttingen said the last bomb was detonated by the ordnance disposal service at around 1 a.m. on Sunday.

In the meantime there had been several minor delays.

The long-distance traffic of Deutsche Bahn was also affected.

According to initial findings, there were no injuries from the planned detonations.

Even after the demolition, the residents could not return home straight away: exploration teams first had to check the area for possible damage.

Among other things, a police drone was used to search for damage from the air.

It was only after about two hours that most residents received the all-clear and the closures were lifted.

In three buildings, the window panes were destroyed by the pressure wave of the explosion, so that the residents there were initially unable to return home.

A danger zone with a radius of 1000 meters had been set up around the location of the bombs.

More than 8,000 people had to leave their homes.

A total of around 260 people were accommodated in several evacuation centers, the rest mainly with relatives and friends.

The corona regulations were temporarily suspended due to the special situation.

Containers filled with water sacks were set up around the sites to deflect the pressure wave of the explosions from neighboring buildings.

Despite this protective wall, warnings were repeatedly given about flying splinters.

In addition to several streets, the Göttingen train station was also closed on Saturday morning and the important north-south connection of Deutsche Bahn was interrupted.

Long-distance traffic was diverted.

After the closure was lifted, rail traffic was back to normal early on Sunday morning, according to a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn.
