Berlin (AP) - In Berlin supporters of Alexej Navalny protested against the detention of the Kremlin opponent in Russia.

According to the police, there was a smaller and a larger demonstration on Sunday, the number of participants was not given.

In one action, a demonstrator disguised himself as President Vladimir Putin was shown behind bars - this was meant as a demand to bring Putin to justice before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Freedom for Navalny was demanded on banners.

The goal of the larger demo was the Russian Embassy on Unter den Linden.

Navalny has been serving a 30-day prison sentence since his return to Russia two weeks ago for allegedly violating probation conditions in a previous criminal case while he was in Germany.

In Germany, Navalny had recovered from the Novichok attack for almost five months.

The Russian penal system accuses him of having violated reporting requirements to the authorities.

In a trial scheduled this Tuesday, a court is due to decide whether Nawalny's previous suspended sentence is retrospectively converted into real detention.
